This public seminar investigates the struggles by feminist anti-apartheid activists to insert feminist politics and consciousness into South Africa’s transition to a democratic state, in addition to efforts to establish feminism as a legitimate field of study in South Africa. As we commemorate another South African “Freedom Day” on the 27th of April 2022, we critically analyse the challenges and lessons learnt from feminist organising in the past three decades, including the embrace of feminist politics and conceptual renewal such as “intersectionality” by South Africa’s contemporary student movement, the Fallist movement.
