Re-imagining economics in the time of Corona

South Africa is a deeply unequal country at the best of times, with an unemployment rate of 39% (including unemployed people that have given up looking for work). With the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown of the country and its businesses, many more jobs are in jeopardy, companies are going under and millions more people face an uncertain future. This is an unprecedented time for the global economy, and South Africa is no exception. What are the possibilities for South Africa at this time? How do we traverse this catastrophe as a country? Is the Basic Income Grant the answer and how do we afford it? Are there opportunities for South Africa to come out of this as a more economically just society? What is business unusual and how does this look in practice? Busi Sibeko takes part in this discussion that also features Duma Gqubule and Nontobeko Hlela.
