The Changing Position of Women in the African Labour Force

This chapter analyses changes which are taking place in the position of women within the peasant sector and in wage-employment. Underlying these changes is the deepening incorporation of African producers and neo-colonial states into the world-wide capitalist system. Although they have been separated here for purposes of analysis, the peasant and wage employment sectors are integrally related to each other. The nature of their relationship is a subject of intense debate which cannot be explored here. Suffice to note that the productive and reproductive activities of peasant women are the epitome of this dynamic relationship.
